How to Make the Most of Your Pool All Year
Once you get your pool area designed to your liking, you will never have to leave your home for an exotic escape. When choosing the type of plants for your pool area, the following are a few important things to keep in mind: water usage, the safety of swimmers, and the amount of plant debris. For instance, you don't want large, deciduous trees or needle-bearing, evergreen trees around a swimming pool since you'll end up fishing all those leaves out of the water! Even worse, plants with invasive root systems can damage a swimming pool over the years by causing cracks in the structure.

If plant debris is left to sit on the pool surface for a length of time, multiple problems will occur. As the plant materials begin to break down, the total dissolved solids (TDS) level increases and the chemical sanitizers become far less effective. Staining of the plaster is another problem caused by plant debris. Avoid planting fruit trees near the pool. Not only are they messy but the fruits attract bees. And as beautiful as flowers are, be aware that they are also “bee magnets”.

There are many plants, such as the saguaro, barrel cactus, and ocotillo, which are perfect for desert landscaping. While these are great plants to grow with little water usage, they are far too dangerous to plant near the pool. Instead, consider other drought tolerant plants that have no hazardous thorns or needles. The Penstemon ‘beardtongue’ will attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Aloe and other succulents will bring a variety of shape and visual interest to the landscape.

Remember that the pool and deck reflect a tremendous amount of sun and the plants you use must be able to tolerate harsh conditions. Quality paving and decking will provide a safe and slip-resistant surface that is easy on the bare feet. There are
a variety of materials to use for your decking, but make sure to choose those with somewhat rough surfaces to prevent slipping.

By working with the landscape, you can save time, money and energy while getting more in touch with the environment.
