Our general rule of thumb for determining the need for a drain power wash is: if you can see the bottom of the pool (the floor) then you can bring it back with chemicals, labor and filtering. If the floor is not visible, the cost of the chemicals and labor will generally be greater than the drain power wash charge, and take much, much longer. Also, extensive algae blooms will stain plastered pools, making an acid wash the next step to take.

A power wash is, put simply, is a pressurized water blast removing any build up left in the plaster, leaving only clean plaster for the new water. Pools can also be bleach washed, acid washed or treated with citric acid. An acid wash is purposeful stripping of a tiny layer of plaster, exposing fresh plaster beneath. Therefore, it is ill advised to make it an annual custom, which will accelerate the need for re plastering. Most plaster coats (sometimes called whitecoat or marcite) are in excess of 1/2", so a few careful acid washes should not hurt.

If your pool has had years of algae blooms, and if your pool seems to grow algae overnight or just bloom very easily, changing the water and pressure washing the surfaces that algae and other contaminants stick to can give you an algae free summer. Once every few years, it may be necessary to perform some heavy pool cleaning that goes beyond ordinary maintenance. The Pima County Health Department requires that all public and semi public pools have the water changed every 4-5years or when the swimming pools T.D.S or Total dissolved solids are above 1,500 parts per million making the pools sanitizer in effictive. Algae feeds off of phosphates, which naturally occurs in swimming pools from organic material entering the pool such as leaves, dust and most importantly dead algae. So if your pool has been green once, and killed off, it leaves behind a higher concentration of phosphates encouraging new algae growth to occur.
